Misprint Thursday wins 2011 UWA 3D Open Art Challenge!

I am not the best builder, the best with textures, the best video editor, certainly not the best singer; but I am inspired by the medium. It is a fantastic opportunity to extend one’s creativity and connect with a world of forward thinking people.

Misprint Thursday’s complex and thoughtful work Digital Glove has taken the top award at the 2011 Grand Finale of the UWA 3D Open Art Challenge, a prize worth $100,000L! Not only that, she took 5th place as well with her work Paranormal Frottage, tying with Glyph Graves’ Excerpts from Reality, bringing Misprint’s prize pool to an impressive $107,500!

Misprint was of course thrilled at her win, but also humbly added, “Basically I want to say that the medium is so underused as a whole to it’s full capacity, and I can’t wait for someone way better than me to blow it all out of the water, actually.”
You can learn more about Misprint and her work when I interview her live, this Friday at the Christmas Expo, 3SLT! She is always great fun to chat with!

The rest of the top ten represented some of the very best of virtual art. The second prize of $75,000L went to Blue Tsuki for his work In Dreams, while third ($40,000L) went to Oberon Onmura for The Chasm. The stunning Strange Plant… Ugliness & Beauty by Claudia222 Jewell took fourth place ($30,000L).

There was also a specific category for unscripted entries, and Gingered Alsop’s Shattered took the top prize here (it was as well the only unscripted entry in the overall top ten).

The Machinima winners were also announced, and the top prize was taken by Tutsy Navarantha for Welcome to the Other Side.

As well, Curator FreeWee Ling shared the following video in which she highlighted some of the artists whose work profoundly affected her this year, and she also includes an important announcement about the future of the UWA challenges:

Giannis Piaggio is an alternative machinima artist inspired by the characters and events that take place in virtual worlds such as Second Life and Open Sim. Born January 29, 2008 Giannis took the mutant avatar form after he was chased and banned from human lands due to his different behavior. In search of similar avatars, Piaggio started recording his random teleports, one of those Theatre of War and UWA machinima contest.

The soundtrack is the " Indian Fog" in performance by a great artist who wishes to remain anonymous.

Conversations with Giannis Piaggio, By Neon Hammerer

Today I met an amazing man who loves The Wastelands as much as I do. I have had land in various parts of this 13 sim, residential, post apocalypric sim group over the years.

From December 2007 I was running the roads looking for salvage. Giannis Piaggio was one of the early Wastelanders who remembers the those first months of The Wastelands. When I first came th the Junkyard there was a broken old cart with a box that said

" buy the hud L$100." I bought the hud and found mysterious parcels fall from the sky. This unique area of sand and swamps and strange people running past or hiding in a burned-out building. Some ofthe most picturesque places are Cormac and The Great Fissure.

The wastelands forum http://forums.the-wastelands.org will keep you informed as to what is going on, so far in the forums there are over 800 users.

I fell in love with the wastelands the second I looked around. Coming out of that dirty bunker I was covered in dust and dirt.

The wastelands community is a very tight-knit group of survivors of the big boom. Over the years the buildings and even the landscape changed but the post apocalyptic premise reminded me of childhood dreams.

((One dream was on a hillside and the nuclear blast hit my mother and I.))

The Wastelands hud is unique in SL and the salvager's game has become a micro-economy, making items from salvage, and selling them. The salvager is linked to the mysterious ways of the hud, and combat in the Fight Night games.

We often play old B movies at the Burnt Oak Theater, so please come to the wastelands, it is a very great place with some of the most incredible builders.

What if all life disappeared from the Earth’s surface? Could the virtual world of the bots* persist?

          Now on view, during the month of December, is my exhibit "Second Libations". The Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) and the University of Western Australia (UWA) have granted me this opportunity to create a full sim artwork. I've included links below with photo essays about Second Libations so that you may get an instant glimpse of it.

We've got a great recommendation if you guys are looking for somewhere to go tonight in SL. Here's an interview with club owner Yarame Baraka to let you know a little bit about Club Pride.

Daki Lapin: So, Yarame, when did you start Club Pride (formerly Club Pride Colors)?

yarame Baraka: if I remember correctly it was Nov. of 2007

Daki Lapin: What inspired you to start the club?

yarame Baraka: well it has always been a dream of mine, but could not get it started in RL , so SL was the place to do it

Daki Lapin: What has been the most rewarding part of having your own club?

yarame Baraka: being able to see people enjoy it

Daki Lapin: So, what sort of events do you have going on during the week for everyone?

yarame Baraka: We have an event Tuesday(come as you are)@7pm, Wednesday(Leather Night)@7pm, Thursday(come as you are)@7pm, Friday a contest event @7pm and Saturday a contest event 2@7pm, Sundays we have Ballroom dancing@6pm and then Sunday nights a contest event @8pm

Daki Lapin: And there's almost always a raffle with Lindens up for grabs also, right?

yarame Baraka: raffle ball every night, starts at 500L and increases as the crowd goes up

Daki Lapin: And all of this is going on at the new location, so what made you decide to move sims?
yarame Baraka: well it was the lag that was a big hinderance having the club on mainland, so moving to a island sim has helped with the lag and seems like we are increasing our numbers once again

Daki Lapin: So there are some great events, great DJs, and awesome contests and who do you think is going to enjoy Club Pride the most?

yarame Baraka: well I hope the people that come in for the events :)

Daki Lapin: Well, thank you so much for your time and all the hard work you've put in to a great club and I'll see you at Club Pride!

POL Arida second life musician

POL Arida is an accomplished singer songwriter working from Edinburgh, UK.
This website represents a small part of his musical archive and covers not only the music, but also words and video of his work. Many of his songs are `subject specific` covering areas far from the conventional love song.

His `Hammer` Guitar style is widely regarded as unique, where the guitar is hit hundreds of times per minute to produce a multi-instrument sound. Many of the recordings have no backing or effects although more recently POL has been working with other musicians to compliment the songs.

He is a well known live performer in 'Second Life' playing virtual gigs on a regular basis.
You can also find many of his videos on YouTube as well as in the video section on this site.

Words are POL Arida’s real passion and you can find examples of these on the words page.
This web site is multi faceted, so take time to explore each section. You can even listen into his live concerts from ‘Second Life’ by checking his schedule in the `Listen Live` section and clicking on the stream at the listed time.
